Gladys Olivia Dukes Fields Sweatman, entered eternal rest on March 4, 2024, at home of her daughter in Cottageville, SC.
Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday March 8, 2024, in the Dukes Family Cemetery 560 Quaker Road, St. George, SC with Pastor Kathy Hudson officiating with burial following service. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday evening at Bryant Funeral Home, St. George.
Gladys was born February 17, 1929, in St. George a daughter of the late A. Clyde Dukes, Sr. and Virginia Shieder Dukes. She was widow of Carlyle C. Fields married 44 Years at time of his death in 1994 and James Robert Sweatman.
A graduate of St. George Public schools and Columbia Commercial College. She was a former civil service employee working for the Veterans Administration, Social Security Administration and retiring from Charleston Naval Shipyard. She was a member of St. George United Methodist church where she was active in Sunday School, United Methodist Women and was the former church secretary. A member of American Legion Auxiliary and 44th Engineers Association Auxiliary.
A son, Shane Edward Fields, siblings, Walter Dukes, Arthur Dukes, Maragaret Felder Hutto, and Ellen Bruce predeceased her.
Surviving: a daughter, Yvette Marie Fields (David) Kurtnacker; stepdaughter, Kitty (Michael) Bishop, Grandchildren, Robert Conrad Gruber, Joseph Carlyle Gruber, Wesley Allen Gruber (Valerie Mesa).
Great-grandchildren; Carolina Ramsey, Cheyanne Gruber, Landon Gruber; Great grandchildren; Thomas Ramsey and Rachel Ramsey.
